September 21, 2012:

Richard Walinski Appointed to Serve on Ohio Constitutional Modernization Commission

Richard Walinski, an attorney with Thacker Martinsek LPA, has been appointed to serve on the Ohio Constitutional Modernization Commission.  Walinski is one of 20 appointees selected from around the state to serve with 12 members of the General Assembly who were selected previously. Among the legislative members is Senator Mark Wagoner (R, 2nd Dist.).  Members of the commission are charged with the task of recommending changes to the Ohio constitution to the general assembly.

Twice in his 43 years of practice as a trial lawyer, Walinski took sabbaticals to serve as Chief Counsel – the top legal advisor – to two of Ohio’s attorneys general: Democratic Attorney General William J. Brown and Republican Attorney General Betty D. Montgomery. He is the only person in Ohio to have been appointed as Chief Counsel by attorneys general from both major political parties.  Walinski has also served two full terms on the Supreme Court’s Rules Advisory Committee (now known as the Commission on the Rules of Practice & Procedure), where he served as Chairman of the Committee and also as Chairman of the Evidence Rules Subcommittee.  To read more on Richard Walinski, click here.

Richard S. Walinski joins Thacker Martinsek LPA

Thacker Martinsek LPA welcomes Richard S. Walinski as an Of Counsel attorney to its Perrysburg, Ohio office.  Mr. Walinski has long had a varied litigation practice, but he has focused primarily on contract, corporate, commercial, and insurance-coverage litigation.  He also has handled significant cases involving criminal law, civil rights, and products liability.

For decades, Mr. Walinski has handled major contract litigation for Dana Companies, LLC and its predecessor, Dana Corporation. Recently, he agreed to represent the Territory of the Virgin Islands in protracted civil-rights litigation against the United States Department of Justice. Last year, he successively defended one of three deputies indicted with the Lucas County Sheriff in a federal homicide prosecution.

Mr. Walinski joins Thacker Martinsek after 42 years with Cooper & Walinski, of which he was a founding partner. He has carried Martindale-Hubbell’s AV rating for over 35 years and has been listed in annual editions of The Best Lawyers in America.  He is also listed in Ohio Super Lawyers, which in 2004 listed him as one of the Top 100 lawyers in Ohio.  In 2002, he received the Distinguished Lawyer Award from The University of Toledo Alumni Association. His family has practiced continuously in the Toledo area for over one hundred years.

Mr. Walinski has served as the top legal advisor to two of Ohio’s Attorneys General, one Democratic and one Republican. He is the only person in Ohio to have served as Chief Counsel for attorneys general from each major political party.  He has also served as Chairman of the Ohio Supreme Court’s Rules Advisory Committee, chairing also the Evidence Rules Subcommittee. While in law school, he was the founding editor-in-chief of The University of Toledo Law Review.  He lives in Ottawa Hills with his wife, Shelley.

August 26, 2011:

Diane E. Citrino to Chair new Federal Bar Association Civil Rights Section

The Federal Bar Association today announced the creation of a new Civil Rights Section and its leadership.  The Federal Bar Association consists of more than 15,000 federal lawyers, including 1,200 federal judges, who work together to promote the sound administration of justice and integrity, quality and independence of the judiciary.  The new Civil Rights Section is intended to create a working group of attorneys and judges across the United States who will further the professional development of civil rights practitioners and work to develop a more open and fair judicial system.
 
Diane Citrino of Thacker Martinsek LPA has been named the first Chair of the new Section.  Ms. Citrino has received numerous awards for her civil rights work including being selected as one of ten “Ohio Lawyers of the Year” by Ohio Lawyers Weekly in 1999 for her work litigating a sexual discrimination in housing case for female tenants, the Rosa Parks Congressional Medal in 2005, and the Nirmal Sinha Commissioner’s Award from the Ohio Civil Rights Commission in 2006.  Joining Ms. Citrino as officers of the new Section are Eileen Rosen of Rock Fusco, LLC (IL) who is the Chair-Elect; Scott Zwillinger of Zwillinger, Greek, Zwillinger & Knect PC (AZ) as Treasurer; and Joel Hlavaty  of Franz Ward LLP, (OH) as Secretary.

August 26, 2011:

Jodi D. Spencer to be panel member of OSBA-sponsored Insurance Law Basics (CLE)

Thacker Martinsek LPA shareholder, Jodi Spencer, will be a featured panel member discussing Bad Faith at the Insurance Law Basics continuing legal education seminar on August 26, 2011.  The seminar is presented by the Ohio State Bar Association and offers 6.0 hours of CLE.  Ms. Spencer advises and represents corporate policyholders in liability and first-party insurance matters.  She also represents individuals and corporations in commercial matters, class action suits and property disputes.  (Read More and register here)

Joseph P. Thacker named a Best Lawyer in America by Best Lawyers

One of Thacker Martinsek’s founding attorneys, Joseph P. Mr. Thacker practices civil litigation, most often involving claims for indemnity under both insurance and acquisition/divestiture agreements.  In the insurance context, he represents policyholders seeking indemnity for many types of losses, including those arising from environmental, asbestos and product liabilities.  He has represented policyholders in coverage litigation in Florida, California, Illinois, Indiana, Ohio, Pennsylvania, New Jersey, and Texas.

Mr. Thacker also has been trial counsel in a number of significant disputes arising out of acquisition/divestiture agreements.  He also serves as national discovery counsel for a major manufacturer and is a member of the Panel of Commercial Arbitrators of the American Arbitration Association.
